Metal Photo Prints — Bold, Brilliant, and Built to Last

Metal prints are one of the most distinctive display formats in photography — and one of the most misunderstood. The process is not printing onto metal the way you would print onto paper. It is a dye-sublimation process in which dyes are infused directly into the surface of a specially coated aluminum panel under heat and pressure. The result is an image that is literally part of the metal — not sitting on top of it — which produces a luminosity, color depth, and durability that no paper-based print can replicate.

At Yellow Lab Imaging, every metal print is personally reviewed before production, produced on professional-grade aluminum panels, and shipped nationwide to customers across all 50 states.

How Metal Prints Are Made

Understanding the process helps explain why metal prints look the way they do. Your image file is printed in reverse onto a transfer paper using dye-sublimation inks. That transfer is then placed face-down on the coated aluminum panel and run through a heat press. Under high heat and pressure, the dyes convert to a gas and bond permanently into the polymer coating on the aluminum surface.

Because the dyes are infused into the panel rather than applied on top of it, metal prints are inherently resistant to scratching, moisture, and UV fading in a way that surface-printed products are not. There is no ink layer to peel, crack, or chip. The image is the panel.

Finish Options — Gloss or Matte

We offer metal prints in two surface finishes:

High Gloss (Standard)

High gloss is our standard finish and the choice for the vast majority of metal print orders — roughly 95% of customers select it. The gloss surface amplifies the luminosity that makes metal prints distinctive. Colors are more vivid, highlights appear to glow, and the overall effect is a print that commands attention in a room. High gloss metal prints are best displayed in spaces where direct light sources are not aimed directly at the print face, since the reflective surface can create glare under bright overhead or directional lighting.

Matte

Matte finish reduces the reflectivity of the metal surface and is the better choice for installations in very bright rooms — spaces with large windows, strong overhead lighting, or situations where the print will be viewed from multiple angles in variable light conditions. Matte still produces excellent color and retains the durability advantages of the dye-sublimation process, but without the mirror-like quality of gloss.

If you want matte finish, please contact us before ordering or leave a note in the notes section at checkout. Our default is gloss — we want to make sure we produce what you actually want.

Ready to Hang Options

Metal prints are available as print only (no hanging hardware) or ready to hang. Here is what ready to hang includes depending on print size:

  • Prints smaller than 11x14: A 3/4" hanging block mounted on the back gives the print a subtle float off the wall — a clean, modern look with a shadow gap between the print and the wall surface.
  • Prints 11x14 and larger: A 1.5" frame with either a wire or a hanging cleat. Larger prints use a cleat rather than a wire for safety — at larger sizes and weights, a cleat provides a more secure, level hang that stays in place over time.

If you plan to frame your metal print or mount it yourself, the print-only option is the more economical choice. If you want it to go straight from the box to the wall, choose ready to hang.

What Metal Prints Are Best For

Metal prints perform best for certain types of images and certain display contexts:

  • Landscapes and nature photography: The luminous quality of gloss metal is particularly striking for scenes with dramatic skies, water, sunsets, and strong color. These images tend to look more vivid on metal than on any paper surface.
  • Architecture and graphic subjects: Sharp lines, strong geometric forms, and high-contrast subjects benefit from metal's clarity and the way the infused dyes render fine detail.
  • Commercial and business displays: Metal prints are extremely durable and moisture-resistant, making them well suited for high-traffic environments — hospitality, healthcare, corporate offices, and retail spaces where a standard print would not hold up.
  • Modern interior design: The frameless, wall-flush presentation of a metal print integrates cleanly into contemporary interiors without the visual weight of a traditional framed print.
  • Portraits with bold lighting: High-contrast portraits — particularly those with dramatic lighting or strong color — translate exceptionally well to metal. The luminous finish makes highlights appear to glow in a way that is difficult to achieve on paper.

Turnaround and Shipping

Metal prints ship within 7–10 business days. Smaller metal prints ship via standard carriers. Larger metal prints — particularly at 20x30 and above — cannot be rolled or folded and ship flat. At very large sizes, freight shipping may be required. If your order involves a large metal print and you have questions about shipping, contact us before ordering so we can discuss your options.

Metal Prints vs. Other Display Options

  • Metal vs. Canvas Gallery Wraps: Canvas has a traditional, textured feel that suits certain subjects and interior styles. Metal is sleeker, more contemporary, and produces more vivid color. Canvas wraps have a warm, organic quality. Metal prints have a precision and luminosity that canvas cannot replicate.
  • Metal vs. Gallery Mounts: Gallery Mounts are a photographic print on a foam backing — lighter, less expensive, and with a clean photographic look. Metal prints are a fundamentally different product — more durable, more luminous, and with a visual character that is distinctly their own.
  • Metal vs. Fine Art Prints: Fine art prints on archival paper are the right choice for collectors, galleries, and artists who need museum-standard longevity on a traditional paper surface. Metal prints are the right choice when the display environment, the subject, or the aesthetic calls for something bolder.
